Community Mental Health Law Project

The Bergen County Mental Health Project provides free legal services to eligible clients who are involved in civil matters only such as those related to Social Security, Disability, housing, landlord-tenant and family law.


To be eligible for the Services of the Law Project individuals must meet ALL of the following criteria:
  • Must be 18 years of age older.
  • Must meet HUD poverty guidelines and not have the financial ability to retain private counsel
  • Must have a primary diagnosis of mental illness. Individuals who have a primary diagnosis of developmental disability, organic brain syndrome or chronic substance abuse are NOT eligible
  • Must have been engaged in mental health treatment for many years
  • Must require substantial assistance in social skills, vocational or educational guidance and community living.
  • Must be a legal resident of Bergen County.

To be sure you're eligible for our service, we'll need for you to provide the following:

  1. (REQUIRED) Treatment plans and/or referral letter from current mental health treatment provider and, if applicable, psychiatric hospital discharge plans

    Birth certificate to prove citizenship or alien registration card or naturalization papers
  3. (REQUIRED) Proof of Bergen County residence (rent receipt, PSE&G bill) OR If you live with someone you will need a letter from them verifying that you live in that residence
  4. Social Security card, if applicable
  5. Proof of marital status, if applicable (marriage certificate, divorce papers, death certificate)
  6. The last eight (8) weeks of paystubs, if applicable

  7. Proof of any other type of income – copy of pension check or stub, if applicable

  8. Proof of Social Security benefits, pension, alimony, etc (for Social Security amount proof, call 1-800-772-1213 and ask them to send proof to you), if applicable

  9. Last three (3) months bank statements for all checking and savings accounts, if applicable.
